Delivered fresh via readers who really like and know their hamburgers: especially when they’re big and well priced, smothered with loads of fixings, and served in a place with character. Here’s a selection of their (and our) favorites.

MONDEROSA BAR & GRILL, Nenana, Alaska. "On more than one occasion I’ve driven 70 miles to eat at the Monderosa, home to the best burger in the state," says Bob Ledbetter of North Pole, Alaska. "It’s a beautiful log building alongside the Alaska Railroad tracks. With fireweed ablaze in the summer, the outdoor patio makes an already awesome burger even better. It’s a must stop on the Parks Highway." (907) 832-5243.

BIG CITY DINER, Honolulu, Hawaii. "Forget about the gorgeous beaches, tropical landscapes, hula shows, and shopping," writes Marsha Jung of El Sobrante, Calif. "My first destination is to eat a burger at Big City Diner." (808) 738-8855.

DUANE’S, Kauai, Hawaii. "Every time we fly to Kauai, we immediately get our rental car and drive to Duane’s, pick up our burgers and drive to our favorite sandbar by the beach to enjoy and savor the burgers," writes Connie Osborne of Los Altos, Calif. "We don’t even go to our hotel to wind down—we go straight from the airport to Duane’s!" (808) 822-9181.

DUTCH GOOSE, Boise, Idaho. "It has the ambiance of a neighborhood tavern and sports bar, with an impressive selection of hamburgers on the menu," writes Tom Glass of Boise. "To make it even better, on Tuesday the burgers are two-for-one. Our favorites are the Mikey Burger and the SOB—South of the Border Burger." (208) 342-8887.

RUPE’S BURGERS, Blackfoot, Idaho.
"After your first burger here, you will want to come back," writes Darrell Wilson of Blackfoot. "If you’re in a hurry, drive up, push a button, and give your order. A carhop will have it to you in a jiffy. Or you can go inside for a sit-down meal. The local decorations and atmosphere are great." (208) 785-5710.

WHEELER’S HANDOUT, Nampa, Idaho. "
Ask for a Long and Juicy," suggests Linda Brock of Nampa. "It’s not the traditional round shape but is rectangular. It is very juicy, and the sauce makes it a gourmet’s delight. Keep a napkin handy." (208) 466-1684.

MATT’S PLACE DRIVE-IN, Butte, Mont. "Step through the door at Matt’s and you step back in time," says Carol Bischoff of Helena. "It’s a very small diner seating maybe 15 people, tops, and I’m certain the décor hasn’t changed since it opened its doors in 1930. In addition to great burgers and fries, Matt’s also has absolutely the best shakes and malts in the world." (406) 782-8049.

MISSOULA CLUB, Missoula, Mont.

That’s why Nap’s is always the busiest restaurant in the Bitterroot Valley." (406) 363-0136.

OXFORD SALOON & CAFÉ, Missoula, Mont.
"The half-pound Ox Burger is a great burger at a great price," says Bob Ringsbye of Missoula. "And they serve the best veggie burger I’ve ever eaten. It’s as big as the Ox Burger and sells for the same price. I’ve never seen as good a deal anywhere." (406) 549-0117, www.the-oxford.com.>

PAPA T’S, Dillon, Mont. "The best hamburger I’ve ever had was a Papa T’s jalapeño burger," says Vicki Ruzicka of Helena. "The place serves all kinds of burgers. Daniel Boulud Brasserie (Las Vegas, NV) – Who would want to pay $40 for a burger and fries? We would! We did! And, we loved it! Talk about the fanciest burger in the world – the “Original NY DB Burger” as it’s called is a 9 oz. sirloin burger consisting of foie gras, wine-braised short ribs and black truffles on a parmesan bun served with tomato and horseradish. There’s also a build it yourself burger bar for those who want to make their own." (530) 534-8806.

Le Tub (Hollywood, FL) - A local hangout with the perfect location, Le Tub serves a sirloin burger that you’ll want to come back for over and over again. Seared over a hot flame, this (3 inches in height) burger is made-to-order and often hard to consume - but delicious nonetheless (with a bunch of secret seasonings in the recipe)! The Apple Pan (Los Angeles, CA) - A longtime burger destination for over 50 years, The Apple Pan is an unassuming joint with a horseshoe-shaped counter that offers no tables but a damn good burger that makes up for the lack of sitting space. Rosebud Steakhouse
If you can get past the eerie feeling of ordering from a tuxedoed captain, this Streeterville steakhouse is Burger Heaven. The burger is a massive 12 ounces, and so juicy the kitchen should consider issuing bibs. The burger, cooked precisely to order, arrives on a soft but chewy pretzel-dough bun that handles the juicy meat without falling apart, and the flavor --with or without melted cheese -- is sensational. All this in an upscale steakhouse atmosphere that is superior in every way except attitude; you're treated the same here whether you order one of the $30 steaks or the $9 burger. And if you dine solo at the bar (perfect when you want to watch the ballgame), the bartender sets your place with a tablecloth -- actually an oversized napkin, but what a cool touch.

Wild Bill’s (Alberta, CN) – Centrally located in Banff, Alberta, Canada, this place boasts top-notch bands, a dance hall, line dancing, calf roping, big screen TV’s and amazing mountain views – not to mention, the best burgers in the area! Offering the legendary Banff Peyto Burger (topped with Canadian bacon, cheddar cheese and sautéed mushrooms), and other options like Chicken, Buffalo, Elk, Wild Boar and Ahi Tuna burgers – Wild Bill’s has got something for everyone.

And on the eighth day the Lord created the Andrews Hamburger; and he saw that it was good.
The Andrews burger is about as close to a religious experience as this reviewer is ever likely to get. Andrews has been in Bridport St Albert Park since before Methuselah and has built up a reputation for delivering a divine fusion of meat, cheese bacon and bun.

The secret to Andrews' success is not in fancy ingredients - it's in their single-minded commitment to making every component the best it can possibly be. Thick juicy red tomato slices get a hint of spice and a brief stint on the hotplate. Lean, herbed patties are grilled till the edges are crunchy, then cheese is melted over the top for maximum gooiness. This is a special burger.
The trek to Albert Park is like a holy pilgrimage for so many Victorians, with some parishioners regularly travelling across town for their weekly burger blessing. It won't take more than a couple of bites for you to renounce your sins and become a convert.

Can I get an Amen?

Warrnambool is famous for three things: whaling, whale watching and Kermond’s hamburgers. And back in 1949 when Kermond’s first opened shop, you could legally indulge in all three at the same time.

Kermond’s is less a burger joint and more a Victorian cult icon. The sign on their retro wood-panelled wall says it all: “Customers purchasing hamburgers for re-heating should request cold buns.” Rumour has it that more than one Melbournite has made the three-and-a-half hour drive to the 'Bool’ just so they could stock up their freezer with Warrnambool’s finest.
Maybe they just do things differently out there, or maybe Kermond’s pre-dates the introduction of leafy vegetables to Australia, but a standard ‘lot’ contains nothing green and no cheese. However a simple request for these little essentials will be cheerfully accommodated, resulting in a superlative example how a burger should be.
Thick, juicy, gently fried tomato is offset by a crunchy-edged patty with the onion cooked in. The egg is soft but not runny and the bacon is thoughtfully pre-cut for your convenience.
Kermond’s is a must-visit for any hungry whale-watching burger fan.

Tessaro’s (Pittsburgh, PA) – While the menu offers much more than just burgers, the restaurant’s soul lies strictly with its famously big, juicy burgers. Get ready for a bit of a wait, since most locals crowd into the booths and get their palettes ready for Tessaro’s beefy concoction of half-pound, hand-slapped cooked-to-order burgers – all prepared in the open 500-degree hardwood-fired grill. The place also offers some of the most imaginable toppings and allows meat-lovers to order medium-rare burgers some other restaurants won’t often allow (thanks to the freshest meat).

FRANCE

Le Bistroy (Bouliac, Bordeaux) – Located on a Main Street in Bouliac (a typical French village), Le Bistroy is set on a hill with spectacular views of the city of Bordeaux below. A cross between a brewery, bath-house and garage, the place does a wonderful job mixing avant-garde with all things traditional. Often drawing a chic young crowd (especially in the evenings), the place serves up a great burger from its regional kitchen (and short menu that changes daily).

Café de Paris (Monte Carlo) – One of the oldest (and most stylish) places in Monte Carlo, Café de Paris serves a great American burger – among its fine French cuisine. Have your burger either indoors or on the outside terrace in this café that’s situated next to a casino. They offer a great mixture of locals and international visitors, so you can’t go wrong.

Joe Allen (Paris, France) – Going strong since 1972, Joe Allen (with its sister restaurant in NY) was the first restaurant to bring American fare to Paris. A favorite of local businessmen and celebrities alike, Joe Allen serves the city’s best burger and some of the most superb cocktails!

GEORGIA

Vortex (Atlanta, GA) – Don’t get spooked! You’ll be greeted with and will enter the restaurant through the mouth of a massive skull. But don’t let this 20-foot thing scare you. The award-winning burger at this place is well worth the visit. Served as a half-pounder with all the trimmings imaginable (from BBQ, Asian and Tex Mex, to blue cheese and mushrooms), the place also features flavored turkey and black bean burgers, for all the vegetarians out there. Trust us, you wanna get the tator tots as your side.

TURKS & CAICOS

Banana Boat Restaurant (Turks & Caicos) – Anyone who has been to the Turks will tell you that this is a festive spot with great burgers. A quintessential island hangout, the place serves amazing half-pound burgers (you’d better be hungry!) and tasty conch burgers you won’t find anywhere else. Oh, and if you can… swing by on a Sunday afternoon to enjoy some of the best reggae music with your delectable burger.

TEXAS

Keller’s Drive-In (Dallas, TX) – An institution in the area, Keller’s is a joint with a carhop service that serves a damn fine cheeseburger! Full of flavor, juicy as can be and first-rate for sure… but wanna know the best part? You’re noshing it in the luxury of your own car just like they did in the 50’s.

So… if you’re looking for something different – this is definitely it.

The Counter (Santa Monica, CA) – There isn’t anything better than customizing your own burger (on a clipboard, no less) – and that’s exactly what this place offers. A five-step process, Counter first lets you choose from beef, turkey or veggie for your burger and then one of more than a dozen toppings (ranging from cheese to salsa) to finish it off. Just make sure after you’ve ordered your dream burger, you go for the fried spicy dill pickle chips – you won’t find these anywhere else!

JAPAN

Speakeasy Diner (Kyoto, Japan) – A café by day and full service by night, the Speakeasy Diner is an amazing hangout in the heart of the city. Known for its great international menu and amazing burgers, the place is famous among locals and out-of-towners alike. Speakeasy also offers English language versions of Japanese papers and large screen TV’s that always have CNN on. Seating is limited (about 40 people), so make sure you’re prepared to wait.

UNITED KINGDOM

Schwartze Bros, (Bath, UK) I have never, in all my life, eaten a finer burger than that served by Schwartz Brothers of Bath (and Bristol). I do not know if there really are siblings with the German for Black as a surname. I was never served by anything other than stroppy students, who looked down their nose at all the customers equally, unless you were one of their mates. But the service was never slow or poor. The burgers are cooked before your eyes, char-broiled in fact. The buns are toasted right there in front of you too. Then piled high with fresh-cut salad, and topped with the topping of your choice from a selection that surely includes blue-cheese but also includes some others I never bothered to pay attention to. There's a vegetarian option, and you can accompany your burger with perfectly acceptable chips, a delicious shake or a Coke. Probably, I don't really know nor care, none of this frippery matters. All that matters is that Schwartz burgers are the finest in the World. OK, so this is just my opinion, but as I lived in Bath for four years, many friends visited. Each was taken to Schwartz, and each left saying, through a mouth full of burger - just like their parents told them not to - that it was... "the best burger I have ever had in my life." And all of this for prices directly comparable with McWimpyKing.

Nowadays, although I live some 200 miles from Bath, I sometimes drive down there... just to have a Schwartz burger.
As 100% proof that we do not live in a meritocracy, while MacDonalds open their 56,000,000th restaurant, Schwartz have only three. Two in Bath and one in Bristol. But Bath is a lovely place, and the Schwartz on Milsom street is just opposite a perfectly excellent pub. So maybe you should put a visit to the city on your list of things to do before you die

THE CHAINS

Hachè *****
24 Inverness Street, NW1 (020 7485 9100)
Husband-and-wife team Berry and Sue Casey named their restaurant after the French term for “chopped” to distance themselves from fast food. You can choose how your meat is cooked, there are good chips and the buns are ciabatta rolls. Haché has the feel of a neighbourhood bistro. Its “au naturel” is a prime burger made with Scotch beef and costs £6.45.

Gourmet Burger Kitchen ****
44 Northcote Road, SW11 (020 7228 3309)
GBK has come a long way since it was founded by three New Zealand chums who called in famous chef Peter Gordon to help them concoct innovative burgers. Now part of the Clapham House Group there are 15 Gourmet Burger Kitchens in London, and additional branches open every month. Everything is cooked to order and the burgers range from the classic to stranger combos such as the Kiwi burger which adds beetroot, egg, pineapple and cheese. The Classic 100 per cent Aberdeen Angus Scotch Beef costs £5.45.

Black & Blue ***
215-217 Kensington Church Street, W8 (020 7727 0004)
A small chain of six steak houses that pride themselves on the quality of their Scottish beef. As well as the various steaks and main courses on the menu there is the classic burger which is well made and accurately cooked, plus a range of more adventurous burgers such as guacamole, foie gras and even a veggie burger. The chips are sound and the service friendly. The Classic burger costs £9.

Hamburger Union ***
4-6 Garrick Street, WC2 (020 7379 0412)
A good burger starts with good meat, and this outfit takes pains to source organic and free-range beef. Anywhere that gives a generous credit to the butcher is thinking along the right lines. There’s a short menu, and the ordering system is a little involved, but cheerful staff make it work. Good chips, very good burgers. The Union Burger costs £3.95.

Ed’s Easy Diner **
12 Moor Street, W1 (020 7434 4439)
Ed’s probably shouldn’t be on a list of elite burger places, but it does such a good job and never professes to be something it’s not. Sit at the counter and have a large, juicy hamburger and a pot of cheesy chips; a real cholesterol-filled indulgence. Freshly cooked, good value and swift service. The Original burger costs £4.65.

The Wolseley
160 Piccadilly, W1 (020 7499 6996)
The hamburger at “London’s smartest café” costs £9.50 and is plump but a manageable size. The French fries are hot, thin and crispy and served in a nifty silver beaker.

THAILAND

Great American Rib: "A half pound of good tasting beef with lots of juice. It’s served on a standard size bun so it is a little hard to get your mouth around. I ordered it medium and it actually arrived that way." (Great American Rib: Sukhumvit Soi 36, Bangkok - about 1,000 m from Sukhumvit Road.)

New York City:

J. G. Melon on the Upper East Side. It's one of the few pub-style burgers here that have left a lasting impression on my taste memory. (J. G. Melon: 1291 Third Avenue, New York NY 10021 at 74th Street; map)

NEW JERSEY

White Manna (Hackensack, New Jersey) – A Garden State institution, White Manna has been serving burgers for over 70 years! A no-frills, shoebox-sized cheap eatery, it still serves some of the best burgers in the NJ Metropolitan area. The secret in these delights lies in the simplicity of the burger and the pure freshness of the meat. But be prepared to wear a bib – the burgers are unceasingly unattractive and often lopsided – but always delish and well worth the messiness.

NEW YORK

Peter Luger (New York, NY) – The “Luger Burger” as it’s fondly known is made up of top-quality meats like prime-aged porterhouse trimmings and prime chuck – which is also no wonder why it’s on our list. Served with a thick juicy slice of onion and on two slices of white bread… this burger is so good, you’ll want to avoid the other trimmings like ketchup or mustard. Here’s a tip: the burger is not on the menu, but if you happen to be in the area at midday, stop in and just ask for one. They’re happy to oblige.

All American Hamburger Drive-In (Massapequa, NY) – A legendary institution that’s been run by the same family for over 40 years, this take-out only eatery has only enough room for maybe six people. Hamburgers served at All American come in four varieties: The Single, the Double Header, the Double Double (A Double Header with cheese and the eatery’s most famous) and the Quarter Pound – all of which are scrumptious and outrageously cheap (all under $2.50).

Union Square Café (New York, NY) – One of the city’s most popular joints, this unfussy place serves one of the best burgers in NY! As big as a baseball, it’s juicy and delish – and served with choice of cheese, fried onions or bacon on a house-made burger bun.

COLARADO

CityGrille (Denver, CO) – Voted “Best Burger” in Denver, CityGrille has been serving some of the most legendary burger west of the Mississippi for the last 8 years. Located just across the street from the State Capitol, the place is often occupied by the local politicians and construction workers all chowing down on the half-pound of ground sirloin served on a chewy Amoroso roll reminiscent of a traditional Philly cheesesteak. Good plain – but so much better when gussied up with a delectable combo of melted Swiss, crisp bacon and finger-lickin’ good Caesar dressing.
